Job Role

Chief Executive

Length of time you have worked at MitC

11 years

What are your main responsibilities

As Chief Executive of Morton in the Community, I am responsible for providing strong and effective leadership to ensure the charity consistently delivers on its mission, vision, and values. A key part of my role involves working closely with the Board of Trustees to support good governance, shape strategic direction, and ensure that our activities align with our long-term goals. I also lead and support our staff and volunteers, fostering a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement to achieve our intended outcomes. In addition, I focus on developing and maintaining positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders, securing sustainable funding to support our work, and representing the charity in public forums to raise awareness and promote our impact within the community.

What does a typical week look like for you

A typical week for me always begins with a coffee and some dedicated planning time. I use this to map out the week ahead and prepare for key meetings, events, and deadlines. Most days, I base myself at the stadium to stay closely connected with the team, encourage collaboration, and provide on-the-ground support to the staff. I usually set aside one day each week as an ‘admin’ day, which gives me the opportunity to step away from the office and focus on administrative tasks. I often spend this time at the local library, where I can work without distractions and stay on top of important paperwork, emails, and planning. A key part of my role is overseeing funding—this includes identifying new opportunities, preparing submissions, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting. This work is essential to help us meet our outcomes and sustain our impact. Each week, I also lead our staff meeting with project leads, which provides a valuable space for updates, shared learning, and cross-team collaboration. I aim to end the week with a short period of reflection, which allows me to review what has gone well, what could be improved, and how best to prepare for the week ahead.

What are the best bits of working at MitC

Working at Morton in the Community is incredibly rewarding, and witnessing the positive impact we make daily is truly inspiring. It brings me a great sense of pride and fulfilment to see what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and a genuine commitment to supporting our community. One of the highlights of my role is experiencing the energy and excitement around the stadium when our various groups are in. Whether it’s Young Carers, Team Talk participants, or those attending our Football Memories sessions, there’s always a fantastic buzz that reflects the strength and warmth of our programmes. A football stadium really is a hub for the local community, and seeing it brought to life every day through meaningful connection and shared experiences is something special Of course, I must give a special mention to the Tony Buckley (and Jane) lunches—they are incredible.

What has been your biggest success in your role so far

For me, our greatest success has been the continuous growth and increasing impact of Morton in the Community over the past 13 years. While the journey has certainly brought its challenges, we have remained committed to delivering vital projects and support to those who need it most. What makes this especially meaningful is our ability to respond during difficult times, adapting our services and stepping up when our community has needed us the most. That resilience and dedication have been key to our sustained success and the strong trust we’ve built with the people we serve.

What are you looking forward to over the next 12 months

I am genuinely excited about the future and look forward to seeing how we continue to strengthen and enhance our projects, ensuring we maximise our impact across the community. A key part of this will involve not only improving the quality and reach of our existing programmes but also launching new initiatives that respond to community needs. By introducing fresh, innovative projects, we aim to expand our reach further across Inverclyde and engage with even more individuals and groups who can benefit from our work. It’s an exciting time for growth, and I’m proud to be part of a team that remains committed to making a lasting difference.
